PG vs VG Ratios in E-Liquid
The PG/VG ratio describes the balance of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) in e-liquid, which together determine throat hit, cloud size, flavor intensity, and which devices the juice is built for.
The Short Answer
Every bottle of e-liquid is built on two carrier liquids: propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. PG is thin, carries flavor crisply, and delivers a firmer throat hit. VG is thicker, slightly sweet, and produces dense vapor. The ratio printed on the bottle, such as 50/50 or 70/30 VG, tells you which qualities the juice leans toward.
What Each Does
- Propylene Glycol (PG): Thin viscosity, sharper throat hit, stronger flavor delivery. Wicks easily through small coils.
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Thick viscosity, bigger clouds, subtle sweetness, softer inhale.
Common Ratios and Their Uses
- 50/50: Balanced. The standard for pod systems, disposables, and most nicotine salt e-liquid.
- 60/40 VG: Slightly thicker, works in both pod and starter sub-ohm setups.
- 70/30 VG and 80/20 VG: High-VG. Built for sub-ohm tanks and cloud-focused setups.
- Max VG (100% VG): Specialty. Used by vapers with PG sensitivities.
Matching Ratio to Device
Thin (high-PG) juice can flood a sub-ohm tank. Thick (high-VG) juice can fail to wick in a small pod coil and cause dry hits. Matching the ratio to your device is the single most common mistake new vapers make, and the one our team helps customers correct daily at both the Fernandina Beach and Yulee shops.
