What is a Nicotine Salt?

A nicotine salt is freebase nicotine that has been stabilized with an organic acid (typically benzoic acid) so it can be vaped at high strengths without the harsh throat hit of traditional e-liquid.

The Short Answer

Nicotine salts are the form of nicotine you find in most modern pod systems and disposables. Chemically, they are freebase nicotine that has been combined with a mild acid, which lowers the pH of the liquid and makes it far easier on the throat, even at strengths of 35 or 50 mg/mL.

Why They Exist

Traditional freebase e-liquid becomes harsh above roughly 12 mg/mL, which is why cloud-chasing sub-ohm setups use very low nicotine. That was a problem for smokers trying to quit, because cigarettes deliver a fast, high dose of nicotine that freebase liquid simply could not replicate without burning the throat. Nicotine salts solved that: they allow a high dose to pass smoothly, mimicking the satisfaction of a cigarette.

Where They Belong

Nicotine salts are designed for low-wattage, high-resistance devices, typically pod systems and disposables running between 8 and 25 watts. They are not meant for sub-ohm tanks or cloud devices, which would vaporize too much liquid and deliver an unsafe dose.

How to Choose a Strength

If you smoked a pack a day or more, 35 to 50 mg is typical. Lighter smokers or social vapers usually do well at 20 to 25 mg. Our staff at the Fernandina Beach and Yulee locations will walk you through the options in person.
